Crepey skin

Lone Tree, CO 80124

What it is

Skin tends to be thin, wrinkled, and looks similar in appearance to crepe paper.

Common Causes

  • Chronic sun damage– UVA/UVB sun exposure breaks down the collagen and elastin in the skin. Once these fibers break down, the skin thins and wrinkles
  • Extreme weight loss– a change in hormones or severe weight loss causes the healthy fat pads to diminish leading to crepey skin
  • Aging– as we age, we produce less collagen and elastin that is responsible for keeping skin plump and supple
  • Lifestyle– smoking plays a huge role in crepey skin, because the chemicals cause a molecular response that damages the skin structures. High inflammation caused by diet or stress can also play a role

How to treat Crepey skin

Dermal Fillers

Dermal fillers  can be used to fill lines and add hydration to the skin. Collagen stimulators such as hyper-dilute Radiesse or Sculptra can also help produce new collagen.

ResurFX:

This non-ablative fractional treatment works to help strengthen the skin’s natural barrier and aid in collagen/elastin production that is needed to help with crepey skin. ResurFX is beneficial for mild crepey skin (on face or body) because the laser beams penetrate into the second layer of skin, coagulating the tissue to allow for new, healthier tissue to grow. Depending on the individuals’ skin concerns, 3-6 treatments are usually recommended.

IPL:

Intense Pulse Light, or a photofacial, not only helps with pigmentation or evening of the skin tone, but it also has a tightening affect which makes this treatment beneficial for crepey skin. The light that is not absorbed by the pigment scatters throughout the skin and will heat up the water in other tissue which creates a collagen-stimulating effect. This helps to build a healthier skin structure in crepey skin. A series of 3-6 treatments recommended for optimal results. In a perfect world, IPL/BBL would be done every 4 months for life to help prevent aging and reduce DNA damage from sun.

RF Microneedling

Radio frequency (RF) microneedling is beneficial for crepey skin due to the 2-in-1 effect of collagen stimulation and radio frequency tightening. These two effects combined into one treatment helps the thin wrinkling of crepey skin, by creating controlled wounds with a tightening effect to promote healthy collagen and elastin structures for plumpness. A series of 3-6 treatments is usually recommended.

Regular Microneedling

Regular microneedling with FDA approved SkinPen is a great treatment for crepey skin. Microneedling works by puncturing controlled wounds into the skin which in turn signals a healing cascade. Through this healing process, collagen and elastin is regenerated, thus making the thin, crepe-like skin more plump, thick, and overall healthier. A series of 3-6 treatments are recommended with maintenance treatments in between.

Elite Diamond Facial

Help reverse signs of crepey skin with the Elite Diamond Facial. This treatment can especially be beneficial for thin, crepey skin because the mixture of Tox and HA filler microneedled into the skin immediately plumps the skin. HA filler helps with an increase in elasticity, restores facial volume and smooths out wrinkles, all while Tox decreases oil production and improves dullness. When this formulation is microneedled into the skin, you also reap the benefits of collagen production and smoother texture, to help soften crepey skin. A series of treatments is recommended for best results!

*of Note*

Crepey skin can be the result of many different factors, that is why it is important to go to a trained medical professional to get a proper diagnosis of this condition first. Without continual care, crepey skin will come back, and sometimes even worse. Also, keep in mind that aging is inevitable so no treatment is a permanent solution, but maintenance is required for keeping the condition at bay.
