Loss of volume

Lone Tree, CO 80124

what it is

Facial volume loss occurs as the cheeks start to lose their volume, under eyes hollow, lips lose their plumpness, and general sagging/thinning of the skin is prevalent.

Common Causes

  • Chronic sun damage– UVA/UVB sun exposure breaks down the collagen and elastin in the skin. Once these fibers break down, the skin thins, loosens, and sags resulting is volume loss
  • Aging– as we age, we produce less collagen and elastin that is responsible for plump, tight, smooth skin
  • Lifestyle– smoking tobacco, drinking alcohol, constant dehydration, extreme weight loss, and lack of nutrients all play a role in collagen and healthy skin tissue
  • Weight loss– extreme weight loss can cause a loss of volume in the face due to a lack of fat to provide plumpness

How to treat loss of volume

Dermal Filler

Dermal filler helps to restore lost volume by becoming a structure to give the face contour, plumpness, and definition. This treatment works well for indicated areas such as lips, cheeks, temples, jawline, hands, under eyes, and mid/lower face. Dermal filler will rebalance the face and bring natural, youthful harmony that is needed for volume loss.

RF Microneedling

RF microneedling works great for volume loss, especially in conjunction with dermal filler, because it naturally signals the body to produce more collagen and elastin fibers to plump the skin and restore superficial loss of volume. The controlled microneedling wounds help to signal a healing cascade generating more collagen, while the radio frequency heat waves tighten the tissue. A series of 3-6+ treatments are recommended with maintenance. RF microneedling in conjunction with dermal fillers are a great combination for optimal results.

Collagen Stimulators

Collagen stimulators such as Sculptra and Hyperdiluted Radiesse help with loss of volume by working with the body to crate natural collagen. These injections are different than normal HA dermal fillers because the product increases the body’s own collagen instead of adding HA to immediately plump or fill an area. These injections last longer than normal filler, and is a more permanent solution to loss of volume, because your body is creating the collagen and elastin fibers itself. A series of treatments are needed, and dependent on the area of concern, for best results.

Surgical Referral

Depending on the severity of volume loss, surgical referral to a licensed, trusted, and experienced plastic surgeon is needed for a fat transfer. If aesthetic treatments alone are not best suited for an individuals desired results or concerns with volume loss, surgical referral is the next best option! Having a honest consultation with realistic expectations on what aesthetic treatments can/cannot do is best for the individual and their time and money.

*of Note*

Because loss of volume is generally a result of aging and losing fat pads that keep the skin plump, this condition will continue to worsen with time and become life long. Before doing any treatment, ensure you go to a trained medical professional to get a proper diagnosis first, because everyone’s anatomy is diverse. Keep in mind that without continual care, loss of volume will not go away because aging is inevitable! No treatment is a permanent solution, rather a guideline for keeping the condition at bay or bettering its severity. See a trusted provider for a complete, individualized treatment plan, just for you!
