The Best Treatments for Neck Tightening
Introduction
When we think about caring for our skin and wearing sunscreen a lot of people remember to give their face the love but many neglect the neck. Overtime, years of sun damage and lack of care on the neck can start to show. Especially if one takes great care of their face, then the neck might really appear to be pre-maturely aging in comparison.
To prevent and treat these early signs of aging on the neck, a number of treatment options are available. In this article we’ve picked some of our favorites!
Overview
Loose neck skin is caused by many different factors. Some of them like genetics and aging are hard to avoid, but others like using sunscreen and avoiding cigarettes, are entirely avoidable.
To treat the wrinkles and lines as they develop there are a number of different treatments which include:
-
Botox or Xeomin
- Cost: $400-$1000
- Best for: neck bands
-
Microneedling
- Cost: $200-$400 per treatment
- Best for: necklace lines
-
Fractional laser (ResurFX)
- Cost: $600-$800 per treatment
- Best for: necklace lines, crepey skin
-
RF Microneedling
- Cost: $500-$800 per treatment
- Best for: necklace lines, turkey neck (mild-moderate), thick neck
Follow the guidelines below to determine what is the best treatment for your specific needs.
What causes loose neck skin?
How do you prevent saggy neck skin and wrinkles?
- Wear SPF 30 or higher on your face and neck every day, even when not going outside. You can still get significant sun-damage from driving or sitting by a window.
- Avoid smoking- smoking is the 2nd leading cause of pre-mature aging after sun-damage.
- Exercise and stay healthy, especially a strong back and core to sit up straight with good posture. If we are slumping with our necks forward those muscles will shorten and the skin will hang more.
- Sleep on your back if you can. When we sleep on our sides or stomach often our neck twists and more lines can appear.
Skin tightening injections
What types of injections could you get to tighten neck skin?
Botox
-
What is Botox for neck skin tightening?
Botox for neck tightening is the use of Botulinum Toxin injections in an “off-label” application to relax the skin on the neck. This makes it appear more smooth and youthful.
-
How does Botox work to tighten neck skin?
Botulinum Toxin injections don’t necessarily tighten the neck skin. They actually relax the skin and certain muscles to make the skin appear more smooth.
-
What is a Nefertiti lift?
This treatment involves strategic placement of Botulinum Toxin injections on the neck and near the jawline. These make the neck appear more youthful and the jawline more defined.
-
How much does Botox cost for neck treatments?
Cost of Botulinum Toxin for neck treatments is usually between $400-1000.
-
How long does Botox for neck treatments last?
This treatment will last 3-4 months.
Microneedling
Professional microneedling can be a great treatment to tighten neck skin. The provider will assess your neck, including: skin quality, thickness, and desired outcome. Then they’ll determine what depth the treatment should performed at and how many treatments you might need.
Microneedling is great for neck wrinkles because it increases collagen production. This works to tighten the skin and reduce the appearance of lines. The treatment happens once a month for a series of 4-6 treatments. The cost is between $200-400/treatment.
We recommend having microneedling done at a professional medical office and not at home or a non-medical Spa. There is a risk for infection, bloodborne illness, and damage to the skin when done incorrectly.
ResurFX
Fractional laser resurfacing, such as ResurFX is a great treatment for the neck. ResurFX tightens the skin by increasing collagen production and remodeling certain areas. This causes the area treated to appear more smooth and tight.
This treatment is best for crepey skin, superficial loose skin and “necklace lines”. It will not necessarily tighten deep or thick sagging skin. This is because the treatment is only able to penetrate a few millimeters in depth.
For neck tightening, ResurFX is done once a month for 3-4 sessions. The cost will depend on if the treatment includes a facial treatment or is done alone. The average cost will be $600-800/treatment.
RF Microneedling
What is the best procedure for neck tightening?
Neck bands:
Botulinum Toxin injections or “Nefertiti Lift” versus plastic surgery consult to pull back neck bands
Necklace lines:
-
Mild-Moderate: ResurFX, Microneedling, RF Microneedling
-
Moderate-Severe: Combination of dermal filler with laser or microneedling
Loose neck skin, “Turkey neck”:
-
Mild-Moderate- RF Microneedling
-
Moderate-severe- Dermal filler (hyper-dilute radiesse) followed by RF microneedling 2-4 weeks later. A series of 3 each
-
Very severe- refer to plastic surgery to consult for neck lift
Thick neck or “fat neck”:
If you are in a healthy weight range for your body type and feel you genetically have a lot of fat around your neck and jawline that is bothering you, you could consider some of these options:
- Kybella or some sort of fat-dissolving injectable (off label)
- Modifying laser treatment such as RF or RF microneedling at higher depths
- Cold sculpting technology like “Coolsculpting”
- Surgical consult for liposuction or “FaceTite” procedure
With any medical treatment, the best thing to do is to schedule a consultation with a skilled provider in your area. You’ll be able to go over your treatment goals, risks and benefits of each option to come up with a plan together. Remember these are medical procedures so do your research and go to a qualified healthcare professional. Seek out those that have a proven record of safety and excellent results.
